The 20L: Why Waterproof is the New Standard for Daily Carry

At KiffLab, we don’t really start our design process by looking at mood boards or fashion trends. We start by looking at problems.

20L backpack for outdoor use

The biggest problem with most "everyday" backpacks is that they were designed for a world that stays indoors. They’re built for classrooms and offices—environments where the biggest threat is a coffee spill, not a sudden downpour during a bike commute or a wet floor on a ferry.

Traditional canvas and nylon bags are fine until they aren't. They absorb moisture, they stain, and eventually, they start to smell. That’s why we built the Amanzi 20L. It isn't just a dry bag with straps; it’s a response to the uncertainty of being outside.

Moving From "Carrying" to "Protecting"

We’ve noticed a shift in what people actually put in their bags. A decade ago, a backpack held books and a lunch. Today, you’re likely carrying a laptop, a camera, or expensive headphones—gear that doesn't get a second chance if it gets wet.

Water-resistant bags are often a "maybe." They might hold up in a light drizzle, but once the seams get saturated, that moisture finds a way in. By using TPU-laminated materials and welded seams, we’ve moved the goalposts from hoping your gear stays dry to knowing it will.

Why 20 Litres?

There is a sweet spot in bag sizing. Anything under 15L feels like a specialized pouch; anything over 30L starts to feel like a trekking pack that’s overkill for a Tuesday.

We landed on 20L for the Amanzi because it’s the most honest size for daily life. It’s enough room for a laptop, a fresh change of clothes, and your essentials without the bulk that makes a bag feel like a chore to carry. It’s about functional efficiency—having exactly what you need, and nothing more.

The Underrated Benefit: It Stays Clean

One thing people rarely talk about with waterproof gear is how much easier it is to live with. Standard fabric bags act like sponges for dirt and odors. If you drop a canvas bag on a muddy trail or a wet subway floor, that grime is now part of the fabric.

Because the Amanzi is built with non-porous materials, it doesn't "trap" the day. You can wipe it down with a damp cloth and it looks—and smells—new again. Durability isn't just about how much weight the straps can hold; it’s about how long the bag remains something you actually want to wear.

Peace of Mind is a Feature

Technical specs aside, there’s a psychological side to gear. There is a specific kind of low-level stress that comes with checking the weather app every time you leave the house.

When your bag is truly waterproof, that stress disappears. You stop worrying about where you set your bag down or whether you need to run for cover when the clouds turn grey. It’s gear that lets you focus on the commute, the hike, or the trip—not the weather.

Built for the Long Haul

We believe the most sustainable thing we can do is make gear that doesn't need to be replaced every eighteen months. Most "fast-fashion" backpacks end up in a landfill because a zipper failed or the bottom wore through.

The Amanzi 20L is intentional. It’s built to be the one bag that transitions from a rainy Monday commute to a Saturday morning on the water. We didn't overcomplicate it; we just made it reliable.

Because the best equipment doesn't just carry your day—it protects it.
