South African Surf Road trip by Red Bull Surf

South Africa's Surfing Paradise

Is South Africa the ULTIMATE road trip adventure?

The founders of KiffLab hail from the lively surf scene of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. Our venture into outdoor product development was shaped by our upbringing along the warm Indian Ocean waters, where we honed our water skills from Richards Bay to the lively hotspots of Ballito and Durban.
Even though we now live in various parts of the world, we share a similar inspiration with the surfers in Red Bull's uplifting video that showcases South Africa's amazing surf culture. We too are captivated by the stunning diversity of our coastline and the remarkable experiences it provides.

But surfing in South Africa is not just about the waves. It's about immersing yourself in the vibrant culture and spirit of the country. From the moment you step off the plane, you'll be greeted by warm smiles and a sense of hospitality that is truly unique to this country.

At the heart of Red Bull Surf's adventure story lies the coastline of South Africa, a place that seems almost too good to be true. Picture stunning, untouched nature, wild animals roaming, and amazing waves that attract surfers worldwide. All here, and waiting for you to explore. Alan Van Gysen, is your guide to this captivating journey.
For those with a passion for riding waves, "The Rainbow Nation" holds an even more enticing allure. Whether you're an experienced surfer looking to challenge yourself or a beginner eager to learn, South Africa has something for everyone. From the vibrant city vibes of Durban to the world-renowned right points of Jeffreys Bay (commonly known as J-Bay) and Cape Saint Francis, there's a 3000-kilometer stretch of ocean along the southern shores that offers as many waves as any comparable coastline on the planet.
The secret sauce? South Africa boasts the most consistent coastline in the world, kissed by two magnificent oceans - the Atlantic and the Indian. Surfers here enjoy two peak seasons. First, there's the winter season, from September onwards, which lights up most of the coast. Then, there's January, when the varied water temperatures allow you to choose between board shorts and wetsuits. It's a unique experience, where winter in the Cape can sometimes be warmer than summer in other parts of the world.
A Tight-Knit Surfing Community
Along this wave-rich coastline, you'll encounter a cast of local characters who are as impressive as the waves they ride. From the hard-charging Durbanite young guns Shane Sykes and Sophie Bell to the revelation that is Zulu surfer "Surprise" Maphumulo, the South African surf scene is alive with talent and colorful personalities.
Along with surf royalty:
Jordy Smith, a world championship tour veteran hailing from Durban.
Mikey February, one of the world's most influential and stylish surfers, calling Cape Town home.
Alan Van Geissen, a world-renowned photographer, documentary filmmaker, and the African continent's preeminent surf pioneer and explorer.
The Ultimate Surfing Destination
As you watch the video below, you'll feel the pulse of South Africa's waves, culture, and spirit. It's an invitation to book your flights and embark on one of the wildest wonders of the surfing world. But surfing in South Africa is not just about the waves. It's about immersing yourself in the vibrant culture and spirit of the country. As you explore the coastal towns and cities, you'll discover a melting pot of cultures and traditions. From the bustling streets of Cape Town to the laid-back vibes of Durban, each destination offers its own distinct flavor. And when you're not riding the waves, you can indulge in delicious local cuisine, visit world-renowned vineyards, or embark on a thrilling safari adventure.
