What is SailGP?

Sail Grand Prix is an annual sailing competition established in 2018, where national teams compete in identical hydrofoiling F50 catamarans, which are among the fastest and most technologically advanced race boats in existence. This event is not just a race; it's a testament to nautical engineering and teamwork, pushing the limits of sailing to new heights.

Where is the SailGP in Canada in 2024?

The Canadian leg of SailGP 2024 is set to take place in the vibrant city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Known for its rich maritime history and stunning natural harbor, Halifax offers perfect conditions for sail racing - consistent winds, expansive waterways, and a picturesque setting that makes it a favorite for both sailors and spectators.

Event dates:
Free racing: Tuesday28 May – Thursday 30 May, throughout the day
Rehearsal: Friday 31 May, Racing 4pm-5:30pm
Racing: Saturday 1 June – Sunday 2 June, Racing 4pm-5:30pm
Times dependent on sailing conditions, tides, and boat readiness

How long does a SailGP race last?

A typical SailGP race lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. These short, intense races are designed to keep the excitement levels high, with teams making split-second decisions at incredible speeds. The race format ensures that spectators are kept on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

How fast do SailGP boats go?

SailGP boats are capable of reaching speeds over 50 knots (nearly 60 mph or 93 km/h). These F50 catamarans use hydrofoils and wing sails to achieve speeds that were once unthinkable in sailing, making each race a breathtaking display of speed and skill.
