The Route and Course Challenges
When it comes to the Dusi, the route and course challenges are what make this event so demanding. The course stretches over a total distance of approximately 120 kilometers, leading participants through some of the most scenic and challenging river sections.
The race starts in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Durban, taking participants on a remarkable journey down the Msunduzi and Mngeni Rivers. Along the way, paddlers will encounter a variety of obstacles, including rapids, weirs, and rocky sections.
One of the most iconic challenges of the race is the infamous "Dusi portage." This is a section where participants are required to carry their canoes and equipment over land, navigating rugged terrains and steep hills. This physically demanding task truly puts participants' strength and endurance to the test.
Throughout the course, paddlers will also encounter low-level bridges where they must crouch or even lie flat to avoid getting tangled with their boats. These moments require quick thinking and agility to maneuver through without losing precious time.
The course is not only physically demanding but also mentally challenging. Paddlers must maintain focus and navigate through the rapids and obstacles in order to stay on track and avoid potential mishaps.
