OUR GOAL IS TO NOT USE ANY VIRGIN PLASTICS AND TO ONLY USE RECYCLED CONTENT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of all our products. By using advanced material, we can eliminate waste and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacturing process. Any substance and material can be potentially or inherently toxic or safe depending on several factors. Learning about their properties and how we can diminish the impact is where we can make a change.
PVC
Single use plastic is our planet’s enemy. Almost half the plastic society uses is used just once and then thrown away. We wanted to remove our products from that statistic. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is dubbed the “poison plastic” because it contains numerous toxins which it can leach throughout its entire life cycle. Almost all products using PVC require virgin material for their construction; less than 1% of PVC material is recycled. Products made using PVC plastic are not recyclable. Most brands in the outdoor market, especially water-based products, use a form of PVC to keep your gear dry.
OUR GOOD
Our products are made from an advanced material called Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). TPU is considered an eco-friendly material for its reusable qualities. TPU is not something new to the consumer - you can find it in medical products, phone cases, shoe soles and automotive parts to name a few. It just isn't used as much since it's a more expensive option.
manufacturing
Our manufacturing process source recyclable materials for production and the raw materials we use in the production process can be recycled again. Throughout the manufacturing process there’s no toxic solvent residue, and no harmful emissions. We use a high frequency heat sealed method on the edges and do not use chemical/toxic adhesives. On one hand TPU expands eco-solutions, while reducing processing times and improving the actual performance of our products compared to harmful single use materials used by other brands.
Recycled process
Despite being one of the strongest materials on the market, TPU has biodegradable qualities, a message we like to champion when describing our products. TPU is durable but can biodegrade over 3-5 years in an environment with concentrated microorganisms such as water or soil. With no dangerous chemical additives the material we use will not change the ph. level when it dissolves when going through a recycled process.
Ripstop nylon
We've chosen to use ripstop nylon for our outer bag that is made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, industrial plastic and waste fabric. Our recycled ripstop nylon lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source. The production process is a lot less harmful to the environment than traditional nylon production. We like to brag about that.
Along with these two main materials the other materials we use on our products and around them are also selected with in consideration for the environment. One example - our tags on our bags are made from recycled paper/cardboard materials. It all helps.
WE ARE FAR FROM PERFECT THOUGH
Our plastic clips aren't manufactured in the most effective way, which is why the team at KiffLab are consistently looking for innovative and cleaner methods of production by conserving or reusing water, decreasing emissions, reducing and recycling waste.
